My secret to squeaky clean brushes

Washing your brushes sucks. It really does. As a makeup lover, I can confirm that this is the main downside of using tools on a daily basis. I tend to put it off until I absolutely have to do it, as the prospect of standing over the sink for half an hour scrubbing hot brushes over the back of my hand is definitely not the most appealing. Having said that, there is no greater feeling than waking up the next morning to a squeaky clean set of brushes, that look almost brand new. It kind of makes the job worth it, and, I'm happy to say that I have a mini solution that will definitely cut down on the time spent (and the hand irritation) of typical brush cleaning. I've been using this combination of products for a few months now, and I reckon that the state of my brushes has actually improved since I've started using one item in particular. At the end of the day, makeup tools can be expensive, so we might as well take extra good care of them (although it can be a pain) to make sure they last as long as possible!

So, without further ado, here's my brush cleaning routine:

1) MAC Brush Cleanser- £12.00

 

I typically deep clean my brushes every week to two weeks, depending on how much I'm using them. In between washes, this brush cleaner does an amazing job as a quick fix. As you can see, I need to pick up a new bottle, but I have no hesitation to do so because it's the most thorough yet conditioning brush cleanser I've tried. It disinfects and softens the bristles at the same time, and although it does have a strong chemical scent, I personally haven't experienced any facial irritation from using the brushes afterwards. To use it, I just dab a small amount onto a wad of kitchen towel, swirl the brush into the liquid and viola! The makeup dissolves straight away, just keep swirling until the brush looks clean, leave it to dry and you're done.

2) Johnson's baby Shampoo- 500ml £2.29 at Boots

There's not too much to say about this baby shampoo. It works fantastically for me because I have sensitive skin, but it also cleans the brushes effectively enough to remove any traces of makeup. This is the product I have always used for deep cleaning, and I can't imagine ever needing to try anything else to be honest!

3) Tonsee Silicone Brushegg- 50p on Amazon!

This little gem is an absolute game changer in my brush cleaning routine! Originally, I was going to try one of the brush cleaning hand gloves, but funnily enough I was on Amazon one day getting a few bits, and this came up in my 'you might like this' suggested items list. Although it's obviously a lot smaller than the proper gloves, I thought that for 50 pence I might as well give it a go, and I'm so glad that I did! Although it is small- it's about the size of my palm, it does everything that you need it to. The flat side of the egg has two different textures, and when you're swirling your wet brush against it, it really lathers up and reaches makeup deep down in the brush. Plus, the fact that I don't have to wash the brushes against my hand is a huge bonus. I highly recommend it if you're on a budget.
